Howard Meyer's Acting Program

Workshops

New 4 week Directing Workshop with Francesco Campari (Co-Artistic Director of acclaimed NYC theatre FIXITSOLIFE) starting Thursday, September 22nd

Introduction:

The workshop is a chance for new and emerging directors to exercise their skills in a creatively safe environment. We will analyze all the steps that lead to a the successful staging of a theatrical event, with a particular attention to the relationship with the actors and the audience.

Over the course of 4 sessions of 3-4 hours each, we will work on specific scenes of great classical or modern plays. A list of all the works to pick from will be provided. After a first reading all directors will be asked to cast and work with their actors outside the workshop hours and bring their discoveries back into the room the following week. Every director will pick his/her own actors from the HMActing community or elsewhere. There will be no evaluation of the result as a finished product, but rather a very specific analysis of the process. We'll integrate the workshop with panels and discussions about art, theater and 'role of the director'.

General info:

  • Max number of participants: 10
  • Length: 4 session. 3-4 hours each
  • Although prior directing experience is not required all participants must have some experience with the craft of theatre (acting, directing or playwrighting). Even if not professional.
The scenes will be picked by the directors from a specific list of plays which will be submitted to all participants asap

BY DAVID DEBLINGER

This 4 part workshop series will bring together a group of participants to work on the following: concentration-personalization-listening-risk-action-relaxation-imagination and the idea of being....proactive.

The group will engage in exercises which build trust and encourage the taking of risk. At the end of the first session, participants will be given a scene or monologue, either classical or contemporary, chosen for them in particular.

There will be one writing exercise for participants to explore and recall the specificity of their own experience/imagination.

This series will explore how each participant can bring as much of their own inner life into the work.

It is an ensemble based workshop in which the group will be asked to challenge one another in a safe and supportive environment.

There will also be discussion, coming from David's own experience, in "creating work for oneself."

QUOTES FROM FORMER STUDENTS

"From the first moment I met David Deblinger I was moved and inspired by his passion and commitment to the power of theatre to transform, heal, and reveal. His experience with actors and non-actors has given him the ability to invite, dare, and prompt each person he works with to embrace their own stories and feelings as their gift to share and magnify as theatre, as art."

Rainer Judd(former student from LAByrinth’s master class, and Intensive Ensemble 2009)

"Your workshop was one of the most amazing and fulfilling experiences I've ever had, related to acting or not. Your method of working with students is truly brilliant, by structuring the activities on a volunteer basis, you allow us to take entire ownership of our accomplishments. It made me want to do everything you put before me and upon completion I thought, I just did something I never thought I could do, what else can I do? It was incredibly empowering. Such a vital part of developing my craft."

Marisa Lowe

"I was immediately taken in by David's charismatic nature and sense of humor. More than that, his wealth of knowledge in the art form feeds his ability to quickly engage the student to develop a deeper sense of trust and willingness to open up and share on a very deep, visceral platform. You want to rise to his limitless energy level."

Mark Gorham

QUOTES FROM PEERS

"David Deblinger is one of the most courageous and honest and hilarious actors I have ever worked with. To gaze into his eyes during a scene is to fall into the eyes of pure, unvarnished truth. He never breaks character. He challenges his partners to follow him into a reality of pure theater. He will try anything, go anywhere to make a scene work. And what makes him intensely funny, is that you never know if he's joking or simply a madman."

Eric Bogosian (actor/playwright/novelist)

"Every time I see David Deblinger perform, I laugh and cry. Dave is easily one of the most hilarious and moving actors I know. He's the real deal".

Stephen Adly Guirgis (actor and award winning playwright)
